Is it the ad, or what happens after the click? A simple diagnosis

To tell an ad problem from a funnel problem, put a number on each step from impression to closed sale for the last 30 days and find the weakest link. Low clicks point to the ad. Clicks without visits point to speed or tracking. Visits without enquiries point to the page or offer. Enquiries without sales point to follow-up.

Think of the path as five steps

When paid ads stop working, the instinct is to blame the ad. New creative gets briefed, the budget gets nudged, and a month later the numbers look the same. Often the leak was somewhere after the click.

Every paid lead or sale goes through the same chain. Someone sees the ad, clicks it, the page loads, the visitor takes an action such as a form, a call or a purchase, and then your team follows up and closes. A weak result means one link is weak.

Cost per lead or cost per sale alone hides where the loss happens. Write the chain down with a number against each step for the last 30 days: impressions, clicks, landing page views, enquiries or purchases, and closed deals. You only need your ad account, website analytics and lead or sales records.

Check 1: is the ad earning attention?

The ad's job is to get the right person to stop and click. Look at three things in your ad platform:

  • Click-through rate compared with your own earlier ads, not with a generic benchmark.
  • Hook performance: how many people watch the first three seconds of a video, where the platform reports it.
  • Cost per thousand impressions, since a rising cost can point to a crowded audience or a tired ad.

If clicks are low and viewers skip the first seconds, the ad has a creative problem. If clicks are healthy, the ad is doing its job and more creative testing is not your first fix.

Check 2: is the click turning into a visit?

Compare clicks in your ad platform with sessions in your website analytics. A large gap can mean a slow page, a broken redirect, a tracking problem or accidental clicks.

Open the ad on your own phone, on mobile data, and time how long the page takes to become usable. If you wait, your visitors waited too, and many will have left before the page finished loading.

Check 3: does the page match the promise?

Put the ad next to the landing page. Does the page repeat the same offer, in the same words, with the same look? A mismatch is one of the most common leaks. The ad promises a quick quote and the page opens with a long company history.

Then ask whether the next step is obvious. A visitor should know within a few seconds what to do and what happens after they do it. Count the form fields. Check that the form works on a phone, that the button is visible without hunting, and that the thank-you page confirms what happens next.

Check 4: is the offer strong enough?

If people read the page, trust it and still do not act, the offer may be weak. Compare what you ask for with what you give. A phone number and a long form in return for a vague free consultation is a big ask.

A clearer outcome, an exact next step, a guarantee you can honestly stand behind, or a smaller first step often helps more than a new video. Fix these before you brief new creative. Our guide on what to put in a video ad brief covers the offer and next step.

Check 5: what happens to the lead?

This is the step most advertisers never measure. Pull your last twenty leads and note for each one how long your team took to respond, how many attempts were made, and what happened next. Slow or patchy follow-up quietly destroys paid results, because the person who enquired is often talking to your competitors too.

If leads wait hours or days, or some never get a reply, fix that before you raise spend. Every extra dollar you add to the ads feeds the same leaking process. A fast first reply, qualifying questions and booking straight into a calendar are the usual fixes. They are part of our lead management service.

Read the pattern

If lead quality is the issue, the ad may be attracting the wrong people. Go back to Check 1 and look at what the ad promises and to whom.

Fix one thing at a time

Change a single link, wait long enough to see a meaningful number of results, then look again. If you change the ad, the page and the offer in the same week, you will not know which change helped. Keep a short log of what you changed and the date.

Be honest about sample size. A handful of leads cannot judge any step, so give each change enough traffic before you decide. Do not buy more traffic until you know where the current traffic is being lost.

This diagnosis is how we start every client engagement. Week one of our first month is a review of the ad account, the landing page and what happens after the click. Questions

How do I know if my ad or my landing page is the problem?

Compare each step for the last 30 days. If clicks are healthy but visits or enquiries are low, the problem is after the click. If clicks are low, the ad is the weak link.

What is a good click-through rate?

Compare against your own earlier ads on the same platform and audience. A generic benchmark hides differences in industry, placement and offer.

How many leads do I need before judging a change?

More than a handful. Give each change enough traffic and time to produce a meaningful number of results, and compare it with the same period before.

Should I fix the page or the follow-up first?

Fix the weakest step in the chain. If leads wait hours for a reply, follow-up usually costs you more than the page does.
