Month-to-month ad agency: what no lock-in contract really means
A month-to-month ad agency bills you one month at a time and lets you leave without a long contract or an exit penalty. The terms that decide whether that is true are the notice period, who owns the ad account and the videos, and whether there are setup fees. At Actually Good Ads there is no contract, and the first month is the only commitment.
What month-to-month means in practice
Many agencies sell a six or twelve month agreement. The reasoning is fair: creative and paid media take time to work, and the agency wants enough runway to do the job. The cost to you is that you stay even when the work is not good.
A month-to-month agency removes that. You pay for one month of work at a time, and you can stop when the work no longer earns its fee. The phrase is easy to print on a website, so check what sits behind it.
| Term | Fixed-term contract | Month-to-month |
|---|---|---|
| Length | Usually several months or a year | One month at a time |
| Leaving early | Often a fee or paying out the term | Stop when a month ends |
| Agency incentive | Keep you signed | Keep the work worth paying for |
| Your risk | Paying for weak work | Less time for the agency to prove itself |
Check the notice period
Some agencies call a deal month-to-month and then ask for sixty or ninety days of notice. That is a contract with a different name. Ask for the notice period in writing, and ask when it starts: from the day you tell them, or from the next billing date.
Also ask what happens in the first month. A short minimum at the start is reasonable, because the first weeks are spent on diagnosis and building. It becomes a problem only when the minimum is long or when it is buried in the small print.
With us there is no contract. The first month is the only commitment, and the exact terms are written into your quote after the free call, before you pay anything.
Check who owns what when you leave
A contract you can walk away from is only useful if you leave with the things that matter. Three assets decide how painful an exit is.
- The ad account. If the agency runs ads inside its own account, your history, audiences and learnings stay with them. The account should be yours, with the agency added as a user.
- The data. Conversion history, lead records and reports should be yours to export at any time.
- The videos. You should own every video made for you, as finished files, with no licence fee to keep running them.
At Actually Good Ads you own the ad account, the data and every video. We launch ads in your account, so leaving does not mean starting again from zero.
Check the fees around the fee
A low monthly price can sit on top of other charges. Ask for every cost to be listed before you sign, and ask about each of these:
- Setup, onboarding or account audit fees.
- A percentage of ad spend, which grows as you scale.
- Charges per revision, per video or per format.
- Licence or usage fees for finished videos.
- Fees to hand over your account or files if you leave.
Our model is a fixed monthly fee, agreed before we start. Plans begin at $1,300 a month in USD. Ad spend is paid to the platform directly and is not part of our fee. See pricing for what each plan includes.
The honest trade-offs
Month-to-month is not free of downsides, and an agency that says so is easier to trust.
- Results take a few weeks. Ads need time to gather data, so judging a new setup after a few days is unfair to both sides. Expect to give it a full cycle.
- Short terms can invite short thinking. If you cancel the first time a week looks soft, no agency can run a proper test. Agree beforehand what you will review and when.
- The first month is a commitment. It is the one thing you cannot walk away from, so make sure you are comfortable with the plan before you start.
- There are no guarantees. No honest agency can promise a result. We commit to the work: fresh creative every month, an actively managed account, and reporting you can check against your own numbers.
How our first month works
The first 30 days follow the same four steps for every client.
- Week 1, diagnose. We review your ad account, your landing page and what happens after the click.
- Week 2, build. We write scripts, produce visuals, edit the videos and make the fixes the diagnosis called for.
- Week 3, launch. The ads go live in your own ad account.
- Week 4, read and act. We scale what works, replace what does not, and plan the next month.
Ads are made with AI video tools and finished by human editors. Presenter and UGC-style ads use AI-generated presenters, not hired creators, and we follow each platform's rules on labelling AI-generated content. Real footage is used when it is the better tool.
Who month-to-month suits, and who should look elsewhere
Month-to-month suits businesses that want to test an agency before relying on it, or that have been burned by a long contract. It also suits owners whose budget moves with the season, such as stores with a busy holiday period, or clinics with quiet months.
It fits less well if you want an agency to take a long, slow bet on your brand with no early signals to show. Brand building over years is a different job. Performance creative and paid media produce readable signals within weeks: which hooks hold attention, which campaigns bring leads, which pages convert.
Our video ad creative and paid media management services are built around that monthly rhythm. If a longer plan would genuinely suit you better, we will say so on the call.
Questions to ask any month-to-month agency

- Which fees apply besides the monthly price?
- What do I receive if I leave: files, data, account access?
- How will I know the work is on track after the first month?
